It probably sounds strange coming from a top real estate company, but sometimes there are more important things in life than buying or selling property.

Family, health, happiness, well-being – these are things that truly matter. And the RE/MAX organization received the most sobering reminder of this last year after RE/MAX Co-Founder Dave Liniger woke up paralyzed from the waist down in his hotel room during a business trip to Texas. What was assumed to be a flare-up of chronic back problems would turn into a seven-month hospitalization to recover from a life-threatening staph infection. Dave endured multiple surgeries and months of painful rehabilitation to learn to walk again.

Dave is one of the most positive thinkers and driven people around – he had to be to change the real estate industry and turn RE/MAX into a global powerhouse. But his painful journey last year shook what he thought was unshakable: His inner strength.

Battling and defeating the dark thoughts that crept into his mind during those long nights, immobilized in his hospital bed, inspired Dave to write "My Next Step: An Incredible Journey of Healing and Hope." His book is available starting today. He wrote it in hopes of inspiring anyone whose strength is being tested to never, ever quit.

He writes:

"Everyone has moments in his or her life that turn into weeks and, sometimes, months or even years. The most important thing to remember is that moments do pass. No matter how bad it hurts, the world does come back into focus. You have to live your life one step at a time."

If you or someone you know is dealing with a tough situation, order and share "My Next Step." It may offer just the boost you or they need to hold on. Dave's honesty is pretty remarkable – and sometimes shocking. But he knew telling the truth was the only way to truly help people.

All of Dave's author proceeds will benefit Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and USA Paralympics.
